Czym jest
Antimony is a metal used in alloys, including some lead-free solders and brass fittings. It is rarely found in source water at significant levels.
Skąd się bierze
In drinking water the usual source is plumbing materials: solder, fittings and some older pipework, especially in new installations where fresh surfaces are exposed to water for the first time. This is why it is part of the Scottish Water new-build parameter set.
Dlaczego ma znaczenie
Long-term intake of antimony above the guideline is associated with effects on blood cholesterol and glucose. Levels in UK drinking water are normally far below the guideline, and the test is primarily a check on the materials used in new plumbing.
Co można z tym zrobić
If antimony is found, the first step is to identify and replace the fitting or solder it is coming from, and to flush new pipework thoroughly before use. Where removal from the water is needed, reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap is effective.
