Chromium

An industrial metal. Rare in private supplies; tested for new-build compliance in Scotland.

Czym jest

Chromium is a metal used in plating, stainless steel, tanning and pigments. It occurs naturally at very low levels in some rocks.

Skąd się bierze

Chromium in drinking water usually comes from industrial contamination of groundwater, from historic waste sites, or occasionally from natural minerals. Some stainless steel fittings release traces.

Dlaczego ma znaczenie

The guideline covers total chromium. One form, hexavalent chromium, is a health concern with long-term exposure, which is why the limit is set conservatively. Levels in UK private supplies are normally far below it.

Co można z tym zrobić

If chromium is found, the engineer looks for an industrial or waste source nearby. Reverse osmosis or specialist ion exchange removes it from the water.
