Zinc

A metal from galvanised pipes and brass fittings. Affects taste and appearance rather than health.

Czym jest

Zinc is a common metal used to coat steel (galvanising) and in brass. It is an essential nutrient in small amounts and is found naturally at low levels in most water.

Skąd się bierze

In drinking water zinc almost always comes from galvanised pipes, tanks and fittings, particularly where the water is soft or slightly acidic. Levels are highest in water that has stood in the pipes overnight.

Dlaczego ma znaczenie

There is no health-based limit for zinc in England; at the levels found in supplies it is not a health concern. Above a few milligrams per litre water tastes metallic or astringent and may look milky when drawn. High zinc often travels with cadmium, which is why both are checked.

Co można z tym zrobić

If zinc is high, the usual cause is old galvanised pipework and the fix is to replace it or correct a low pH so the water stops dissolving the coating. Flushing the tap before use reduces the amount in the meantime.
