Czym jest
Iron is one of the most abundant elements in the ground, and dissolved iron is a frequent finding in boreholes and wells. Freshly drawn water may look clear, then turn cloudy or orange as the iron reacts with air.
Skąd się bierze
Iron dissolves into groundwater from iron-bearing rocks and soils, especially where there is little oxygen. It can also come from rusting iron or steel pipework, tanks and borehole casings, and from iron bacteria growing in the system.
Dlaczego ma znaczenie
Iron is an essential nutrient and the guideline is set for taste and appearance, not health. Above it, water tastes metallic, stains laundry, baths and basins orange-brown, and can block filters and fittings with deposits. Iron bacteria can produce slimes and smells.
Co można z tym zrobić
Dissolved iron is removed by oxidising it and filtering out the particles, using an iron-removal filter with a catalytic media, or aeration followed by filtration. Low levels can sometimes be handled by a water softener. Where the source is rusting pipework, replacing it is the answer. A Pozzani engineer will match the treatment to the form of iron and the manganese level, which often goes with it.
